Studio M for Good - Felt and Fiber Arts

Marina Rheault Post Felter & Fiber Artist

I primarily work using the wet felting technique - an 8,000 year old technique wherein raw fibers are layered, then using soap, water, and agitation the fibers become permanently entangled creating felt.

I am conscious of the craft at play, of my experience of the materials, and of the evolution of the felt work. I gather inspiration from my experiences, from nature, and from other artists’ work. I work to create objects of beauty which are satisfyingly tactile and which nourish the soul.

BIO

A bit about me

With a lifelong love of using my hands to create, I began exploring mixed media working with textiles, broken car glass, and found objects in the early 1990’s. I discovered felt in 2011 and fell in love. I work with raw fibers (wool, alpaca, silk) exploring sculptural art: vessels; wrapped found objects, stones, and driftwood; and larger pieces including rugs, wall art, sculpture, and game boards; I also make wearable art: nuno-felt scarves and dresses (using silk, cotton textiles, and fiber), bags, and hats.

In recent years I've been incorporating botanical dyeing and printing into my work playing with the alchemy and synergy of these combined techniques. 2018 was the Year of Botanical thinking — after studies in botanical printing and natural dyeing I participated in a group show in Ireland and a solo show in Portland, ME. In 2017 I participated in a group show in Iceland and had a solo show at Oliva Gallery (Chicago, IL). I have been awarded residencies at Textílsetur (Blönduòs, Iceland, 2017) and Blueberry View Artist Retreat (Benton Harbor, MI, 2011). In other media I have participated in group shows at Judy Saslow Gallery (Chicago, IL) and The Drawing Room (Portland, ME). I offered works to many fundraising auctions since 1997. I have participated in several Felter’s Fling retreats as well as a many masterclasses with international felt artists.
